WHO'D BE A VOLUNTEER.?
JANE WOULD!!!

Who am I? Jane Lambie

Environment - I live near Wallisdown and was born in Winton Bournemouth.

Family - Just myself and my son who is a pupil at St Peter's School, Southbourne.
Background/qualifications - From the age of 16 I worked as a qualified riding instructor, working and managing a riding school and training horses for a living.

After getting married and having my son, I changed my vocation and trained as an Adult Education Tutor, teaching the terrified about computers and new technology. I enjoy teaching and feel that passing on knowledge and skills is so important to us all, in the quest to improve ourselves in all aspects. Whether it's learning a new skill to help get a better job or learning about a new hobby for pleasure. Learning is something we can all do.

Work - My main occupation is teaching the terrified to use a computer but I also work part time for Bournemouth Borough Council Road Safety Division as a relief 'lollipop' lady. Most afternoons and weekends I can be found helping children and young people be 'road wise'. I pass on common sense life saving skills and point out the dangers of today's traffic performance.

I like to feel that I am saving a child's life. I know it works as parents have told me, after their child has had a near miss experience on their bicycle, that they remembered something I taught them which actually saved their life. I am rewarded time after time with similar stories that the knowledge I pass on does work and I think this is why I give up so much of my spare time. The rewards outweigh my modesty.

Another pursuit takes me to a similar voluntary occupation as a Streetwise volunteer. Streetwise is an interactive safety centre for all ages. I am one of many dedicated tour guides who help children, teenagers and 'grown ups' learn about safety, whether it's safety in the home, on the road, or in the street.

Viewpoint - In an ideal world I would like to see all children safe from harm but I know this is a difficult task to achieve. This is my reason for educating children and young people on safety issues. Hopefully, it makes them aware of the potential life threatening dangers. If I can help make the world a little less frightening for them, I have achieved my goal.

Giving up some spare time to help others has great rewards and benefits. Working as a volunteer for the past 10 years with Parent Teacher Associations, Cycle Proficiency Training and recently with Streetwise has improved me mentally, personally and sociably. If you are interested in giving a little time for a good course there are lots of organisations looking for help. Believe me, being a volunteer makes you feel good.

You can make a difference.
