* STOP PRESS: Bowlly Returns
Seventy years ago Britain’s first pop icon, Al Bowlly, graced the stage at some of London’s most prestigious venues. Now, the wonder of Bowlly ‘returns’ as Damion Scarcella follows sell out performances of his original one-man show.
‘The Bowlly Years – Megaphone to Microphone’ is a new musical portrayal of the life and times of Bowlly. Described by Broadway and West End Producer Beth Trachtenberg as, “a musical and theatrical gem”, the performance honours the life and career of Al Bowlly in a captivating evening’s entertainment. Beautifully constructed and executed with the greatest heart, Scarcella recreates yesteryear in an intimate setting of evocative storytelling and nostalgic vocals.
Al Bowlly pioneered a sentimental style of vocal expression in an era when times were hard, money was scarce but music was great. Bowlly crooned as young lovers danced at London’s glamorous hotels. From the Dorchester to The Savoy, which is undergoing a renaissance itself this year, Bowlly became the face of the resident dance bands and delighted many an audience.
This charming and energised performance has thrilled theatre lovers of all ages as audiences have experienced the romance of falling in love, the heart-ache of love lucked-out, the dizzy highs of success and the melancholy lows which marked the beginning of an untimely end.
“An excellent show which captures the Bowlly magic” - Ray Pallett, Editor of Memory Lane magazine & biographer of Al Bowlly
“A poignant portrayal of his life’s life story” - Doremy Vernon, English Actress and former Tiller Girl
