NHS Beacon Award Scheme
Part of the Learning Network

Spreading Good Practice across the NHS

The NHS Learning Network has been designed to support the modernisation agenda and to boost the spread of good practice in service delivery and management throughout the NHS. The Beacon Programme is a key element of the Learning Network offering a practical way of disseminating good practice within the NHS, its partner agencies such as social services departments and across governments.

FRANK DOBSON, HEALTH SECRETARY, AT STREETWISE

In 1999 Streetwise was selected as a 'first wave' NHS Health Improvement Beacon Award Winner both in recognition of its success and with the aim of encouraging it to spread this 'best practice' throughout the NHS. Dr Paul Harker, Consultant in Public Health, Manager of HealthWorks - Dorset's Health Promotion Agency - is on the Board of Trustees of Streetwise. He said that he was "delighted that Streetwise has received this prestigious award and that the NHS publicly recognises and values the unique contribution that Streetwise is making to the prevention of accidents in the community".

In September 1999, as one of his last official duties as Health Secretary, Frank Dobson MP, visited Streetwise to present the first ofthe national NHS Health Improvement Beacon Award Certificates. Mr. Dobson also saw the Safety Centre in action as school children from a local school visited selected scenarios on a Safety Tour.

If your region has plans for an interactive safety centre we can help….

Following the opening of the centre in January 1999, and the drive for safety education with the Government's Healthier Nation paper, several permanent interactive safety centres are in varying stages of development across the country.

At Streetwise we gained valuable experience both in setting up our centre as well as, now, having experience of operating and developing it as a central resource for community wide safety and citizenship education. Whatever stage your region is at with its interactive safety education scheme - whether you are planning your own permanent centre or if one already exists, we are available to help spread ideas and offer short cuts which could save your authority time and money.
